Sedex has two main objectives:

1. In order to ease the burden on suppliers when they must face to a lot of audits, questions and certificate.

2. Efforts to improve ethics in the performance of global supply chain

The core product of Sedex is an secure online database that allows  members to store, share and report information in four key areas:

- Labour Standards

- Health & Safety

- Environment

- Business ethic

Sedex has launched since 2004, now there are more than 37,000 organizations from around the world have participated in Sedex to create an ethical data exchange platform in global supply chain.

With the announcement of Code of practice SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) Sedex offer 10 basic principles, as follows:

1.      Forced Labor: No forced labor or involuntary prisoner

2.      Freedom of association: Workers have the right to join or form unions which they choose for collective bargaining agreements

3.      Safety and health: Workers must be worked in a safe environment to ensure their health. They need to be trained and accessed to clean toilet facilities and potable water

4.      Juvenile labor and child labor: Do not use child labor. Young people under 18 years old must not be worked on the night shift and adverse conditions

5.      Wage: Wage and benefit must be paid to suit national laws (eg Labor Code)

6.      Working hour: In all cases, the employee shall not be required to work more than 48 hours /week and must be relaxed at minimum 1 day/7 working days on average

7.      Discrimination: No discrimination in hiring, welfare, training, promotion, termination or retirement based on race, social caste, nationality, religion, age, illness, gender, marital status

8.      Regular Employment

9.      Discipline: No discipline, physical abuse or threats or other forms

10. Other issues

Please note, Sedex is not a body who establish standard or certification. Instead the role of Sedex is to allow you to share information efficiently and manage supply chain with the aim of promoting continuous improvement.
