What Is IATF 16949:2016?
IATF 16949:2016 is the automotive quality management system standard developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF). It is used together with ISO 9001:2015 and includes additional automotive-sector requirements.
The standard replaced ISO/TS 16949. Its key objectives are continual improvement, defect prevention, reduction of variation and reduction of waste throughout the automotive supply chain.
IATF 16949:2016 remains the current standard. However, organizations should also monitor applicable sanctioned interpretations, customer-specific requirements and the IATF Rules for Achieving and Maintaining IATF Recognition.
Who Is IATF 16949 Suitable For?
IATF 16949 certification is intended for organizations that manufacture production parts, service parts or accessory parts specified by automotive customers. It is widely applied by automotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, Tier 2 suppliers and organizations providing value-added manufacturing activities within the automotive supply chain.
The certification scope may include manufacturing sites and relevant remote support functions, depending on the organization’s activities and the applicable IATF Rules. Eligibility for certification must be confirmed with an IATF-recognized certification body.
Customer-Specific Requirements in IATF 16949
Customer-Specific Requirements, commonly known as CSRs, are additional requirements issued by automotive OEMs. They form part of the applicable audit criteria for suppliers and must be incorporated into the organization’s quality management system.
CSRs may include requirements for APQP, PPAP, supplier development, special characteristics, warranty management, customer scorecards, product safety, contingency planning, capacity planning and performance targets.
Because OEM requirements can change, organizations should review the latest CSRs from their customers and maintain an effective process for identifying, implementing and monitoring these updates.
Core Tools and Process-Based Quality Management
IATF 16949 requires organizations to use appropriate quality-planning and problem-solving methods. In practice, automotive suppliers commonly apply the automotive core tools, including:
- APQP – Advanced Product Quality Planning
- PPAP – Production Part Approval Process
- FMEA – Failure Mode and Effects Analysis
- SPC – Statistical Process Control
- MSA – Measurement Systems Analysis
These methods support risk-based thinking, process control, defect prevention and data-driven improvement. They should be integrated with product development, supplier management, manufacturing control plans and corrective-action processes.
Internal Audit Requirements
Internal audits are a critical part of an effective IATF 16949 quality management system. The audit programme must be risk-based and include quality management system audits, manufacturing process audits and product audits at planned intervals.
A quality management system audit evaluates conformity with IATF 16949, ISO 9001 and applicable customer-specific requirements. Manufacturing process audits verify that production processes are effective and controlled. Product audits independently verify whether products meet defined dimensional, functional, material, packaging and labelling requirements.
Internal auditors must be competent for their audit scope. This includes understanding the automotive process approach, risk-based thinking, applicable customer-specific requirements, relevant core tools and audit-planning, reporting and follow-up techniques. Manufacturing process auditors also need sufficient technical knowledge of the processes they audit.
IATF 16949 Certification Process
Organizations seeking certification are assessed by an IATF-recognized certification body. The certification process typically includes readiness activities, a Stage 1 audit, a Stage 2 audit, surveillance audits and recertification audits.
The current IATF Rules 6th Edition became effective on 1 January 2025 and applies to IATF-recognized certification bodies. Organizations should understand the requirements that affect audit planning, certification readiness, support locations, nonconformity management and certificate maintenance.
Certification is granted only by an IATF-recognized certification body following a successful independent audit.
